Thinking About Hiring a Graphic Designer?

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

Here are four questions to ask yourself before you do…

So, you want to hire a professional graphic designer for your website and marketing materials. You have narrowed it down to three graphic designers, but you are not sure who to hire for your project. Before you hire any graphic designer, there are a few questions you will want to ask yourself. Here they are below:

1) Is the graphic designer talented enough?

Most graphic designers are very talented, however, when you need graphic design work done for your business, you will want to make sure the designer is right for the job. Remember, first impressions are everything. Your company’s image has to be impeccable. Start by reviewing the graphic designer’s portfolio and decide if they are the right fit for your project.

2) Does the graphic designer have experience?

In addition to reviewing graphic design samples, you will want to ask the designer to provide you with 1 or 2 client references.  This will help you determine if he/she is someone you will want to do business with.

3) Are the graphic design rates reasonable?

In other words, are the graphic designer’s rates extremely expensive or very cheap? When a person’s rates are ridiculously low or too high than normal, this is usually a red flag.  For example, let’s say the average price of your design project is around $700-$900. A designer gives you a quote for $100. Naturally, anyone would want to go with the person who charges the cheapest rates …but you may not receive quality work. Always go with the happy medium when it comes to pricing.

4) Will the graphic designer provide me with quality work?

This is why you should never hire a graphic designer based solely on price. You will want to make sure the designer is capable of providing quality design work. Believe it or not, your website visitors and potential customers will judge the appearance of your website design and your marketing materials. So, you will want to make certain the graphic designer is able to produce quality work.

5 Important Questions to Ask a Web Designer

Thursday, September 6th, 2012

When choosing a web designer, it is recommended that you compare services and rates from at least 3-4 designers before making a final decision.  If you want your website built the proper way, you will need to take it one step further and ask the web designer a few important questions before signing the dotted line.

Here are 5 important questions to ask a web designer:

  1. Have you ever built websites like the one I want built? Let’s say that you want an ecommerce site built. You will want someone who specializes in building ecommerce sites. If you hire someone who has never built an ecommerce site, you are wasting your time and money.
  2. Can you provide me with at least 2 references from companies that you have built websites for? Sometimes consumers will read the website testimonials and call it a day. You will want to ask for verifiable references from previous customers.
  3. Does your web design company only use web templates? Many web design companies use only web templates. If you want a professional looking website with maximum functionality, you will want a web designer who can provide custom web design services.
  4. Can you create a logo for my website? Having a well designed logo for your website is important for your brand image. Ask your prospective web designer if he or she provides logo design services. You will find that many web design companies like 8Consulting provides logo design services.
  5. What is the time frame? The amount of time it takes for your site to be built depends on the complexity of the site. Normally, a small professional website takes up to 20 days.

Finding the right web designer to build your site doesn’t have to be complicated. When you ask your prospective web designer the questions above, their answers will help you determine who to hire.  Remember, the key to having a well

How we became web designing experts for the hair industry

Recently, we had the opportunity to work on several hair-product websites. Our clients sell a vast range of hair products- everything from wigs, weaves, synthetic extensions and human hair to shampoos, relaxers and other beauty products. Correctly identifying the importance of a web presence and the benefits of e-commerce, our clients wanted us to create high quality websites for them that could not only help them attract more customers but also enable them for effectively and efficiently selling their products online. To that end, we started working on perfectly customized websites for each one of clients. Here are some interesting details on three of our biggest success stories:

HairWeavon proclaims itself as a provider of quality hair extensions for black women. As our client, they wanted us to build a website that could complement this claim through a compelling design, prominent placement of their products and strengths and a customer-centric focus. To accomplish that objective, we included a blog on the website. Now the HairWeavon staff is easily able to post updates about new hair products, offerings and other information with a few simple clicks. We also included a nifty currency and language converter for the HairWeavon store to assist international customers. Thanks to such features, customers are not only instantly notified of the newest HairWeavon products but are able to browse through the products with the convenience of their own language and currency. The result? Sales at HairWeavon have reached a new high!

For Unique Hair Extensions, we truly went beyond basic web design. Like with HairWeavon, we created an online store for Unique Hair Extensions but, keeping in mind our particular client’s customer base, we also included options for wholesale/distributor and retail sales.  Our client at Unique Hair Extensions also appreciated the built-in article manager we incorporated in to the website. And to top it off, we created an impressive flash animation, featuring Unique Hair Extensions’ top products, and displayed it prominently on the website. It was a lot of hard work but it was totally worth it when we experienced the final result and secured ourselves yet another satisfied client.

Our web design for Kobo Hair Extensions features an elegant understated look and a streamlined structure. The content on the Kobo website is neatly organized in several visible categories and visitors can easily click through to the section that interests them the most.  Since Kobo Hair Extensions deals in a variety of hair products, we wanted to make sure we covered all of its offerings and created a website that could truly be the one stop shop for customers of hair products.

Be sure to visit our clients’ websites discussed above and let us know what you think. And if you want us to design your own hair product site, feel free to contact us at any time.

2010 FIFA World Cup™ South Africa: Our Most Fun Project

Wig Box packaging and Headbands packaging for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

The Final Products – Wig Box packaging and Headbands packaging for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

The World Cup hasn’t been the only thing that’s been keeping us up last month. We had the opportunity to work on an amazingly interesting project for a great client and we poured all our creative juices into it.

Hair & Accessories Inc. contacted us and laid out what they wanted. The project covered some broad fields but with a lot of hard work and some kickass ideas, we were able to get it all done- with spectacular results. Here’s the story!

Okay- so what we had to do was design a variety of headbands, Afro wigs and Mohawk wigs. Moreover, we were to design the wigs packaging. And these were not going to be just any type of headbands and wigs- these were going to be FIFA and world cup themed. And so the hair wig packaging also had to be similarly designed.

We started with a grand brainstorming session.  All of us pooled in our ideas for the illustrations, created mock-ups and then picked the best ones. We did all the design sketches in Adobe Illustrator. About the design itself: because FIFA represents global union, fun and celebration, our aim was to design products and wigs packaging that reflected just that. So we used vivid and bold colors and a design so vibrant and attractive that it leaves you no choice but to notice it. Like the official FIFA 2010 logo, our hair wig packaging (and the products inside them) utilizes lots of reds and yellows and a design that makes the most of bright, colorful broad strokes. All of this is set to clean white backgrounds for maximum accentuation of the design’s powerful colors. But it didn’t just stop there. We also went a step further and created a number of product images. After creating the headbands and wigs, we used Photoshop to affix them to images of models so customers could see how the products would look when actually worn. Our end results would surely attract customers to make purchases- a goal that governed our entire process.

Once we were done with the design, we adapted it to a variety of marketing tools. These included:

  • Catalogs
  • Posters
  • Postcards
  • Business cards
  • Fliers

We also promoted our clients’ products on many different websites. To showcase everything we created to our client, we put up a simple website so they could see and review everything in a convenient manner.

From designing the products and packages to creating all the marketing material, the project was laborious enough to keep us up for 3 consecutive nights at times- but it was all so much fun to work on that we enjoyed every moment of it! It’s always great to see the fruit of all your creativity and efforts turn out so well.

Final word: We have to say- given how successful this project was (not to mention how much fun we had while working on it) we would love to take on more work like this for, both, national and international events!
